For more than ten years, Marc Silverman has been a Manhattan-based digital and video/media specialist using the Macintosh and related technologies to create digital images, web sites, and presentations for advertising and other marketing objectives. As a professional computer graphics trainer and consultant, he provides training and lectures on imaging and design applications to clients in corporate art departments, public training facilities, private student groups, the New York MacUsers' Group, and is an Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute Manhattan.

Web Page Design - Introduction
This introductory class will provide students with the working knowledge they'll need to create Web Pages. Basic HTML commands will be covered and used in a way to show that a Web Page can be as easy as a text document to create and revise. Text formatting and sizing; creating background colors or background graphics; creating Links to other pages; and using specific Freeware/Shareware applications to simplify your workflow will be covered in this class. By the close of this level students will have created a Web Site and will have gained the ability to continue working on their own. Handouts, an HTML Shareware Vocabulary application, and other Shareware Graphic applications will be provided to all students.
Web Page Design - Intermediate
In this class we will cover intermediate aspects of Web Design, including creating Tables of varying types; Indenting Text; Using Ordered and Bulleted Lists; Creating Fill-In and Pop-Up Menu Forms; Using the Mailto command to receive entered info; Using Transparency in Images; and Creating Image Maps.
MacroMedia Flash - Introduction
This class will teach you how to create and animate vector-based graphics without programming. You will learn to deliver fast interactive animation, sound, buttons and graphics over the web. Animated Graphics and Logos have the power to enliven web pages, but their use requires specific skills and designer techniques to assure optimum effectiveness. We'll cover the use of Flash to create animated graphics, incorporate sound, and prepare the final files for speedy transfer to web visitors.
MacroMedia Flash - Intermediate
Creating multi-layered animated graphics which include some of the more advanced capabilities of Flash will be the focus of this class. Masking, Moving elements along a path, specialized type effects, and using video clips will be covered.
Speeding the Art - Creating Effective Graphics for the Web
Every art director knows how to make a cool web image in Photoshop, but what is the difference between a oversized file that takes forever to download and a sharp, fast loading graphic that gets on screen quickly and even catches the eye with animation? Learn the design tricks and technology tips that give your web site an effective, efficient and modem-friendly graphic design. Macintosh Freeware and Shareware applications will be provided.
Adobe Premiere - Introduction
Adobe Premiere is a powerful video and audio editing software package designed to be a useful tool for the professional and novice alike. Video and multimedia enthusiasts will find it a valuable tool for tasks such as video editing and creating QuickTime movies for presentations and CD-ROMs. In the Foundation sessions we will combine source material to make a movie that can be viewed with any application that supports the QuickTime movie format. We will cover the main windows of the user interface - the Project window, Construction window, Transition window, Controller and Preview window. We will also cover the Video and Audio Tracks, Transition Track, Special Effects Tracks and their use in editing. Previous knowledge of the Macintosh is a prerequisite for this class.
Adobe Premiere - Intermediate
In the Foundation sessions we created, assembled, previewed, and compiled an Adobe Premiere QuickTime movie. The Intermediate Sessions expand upon these steps, providing a closer look at the commands, tools, and techniques used to assemble a movie project. We will cover the Project Window display options, Previewing clips in the Clip Window, Changing the Construction Window's time settings, Placing In and Out Points for clips, Adding Special Effect Transitions, Creating Transparency Effects, Using various Filter Plug-Ins and Using the Trimming Window. Details about Importing Video and Audio Clips and setting Project Presets will be demonstrated.
Adobe After Effects - Introduction & Intermediate
Explore Adobe's powerful desktop tool for compositing and creating animation and special effects for film, video, multimedia and internet projects. We'll cover time-based effects, compression and cinematic techniques, title design, key frame tools, integrating video, still images, audio and text. This course will prepare you with the basic tools to create sophisticated animations for use on the internet, CD-ROM, and broadcast quality video.
Beginning Photoshop Techniques: A Practical Overview
This seminar is an overview of the techniques and practical issues involved in the use of Photoshop. It will focus on the selection and use of tools to achieve the desired results with digitally processed photographs or computer generated images. An introduction to the techniques of channels and masking will enable participants to modify and combine images. The use of special effect and filters for the modification of images will also be discussed. This class is intended for graphic artists, video and multimedia producers, and photographers who are beginning to use Photoshop or who wish to learn how this powerful program can help them to achieve their creative objectives.
Photoshop Intermediate Techniques
This Photoshop class covers the Paths Palette, creating Clipping Paths for export to QuarkXPress, placing Type on a Curve in Photoshop using paths exported to Illustrator, then continues with basic Channel Operations and the related concepts needed to afford proficiency with these powerful Photoshop functions. Students will be introduced to other concepts which advanced Photoshop users have mastered, including Duotones, Levels and Curves dialogs; and Prepress pointers.
Advanced Photoshop Techniques: Let The Algorithms Do it!
It's not always the brushes and the colors that give skilled Photoshop users the edge - it's the working knowledge of Masks, Channels, Calculations, Curves, Ramps, and associated algorithmic functions that enable the creation of those amazing images. To master the possibilities of Photoshop it is necessary to understand and utilize the power that Channel Calculation Operations provide. In this session we will explore the techniques of the advanced Photoshop user, including special effects with type, and the creative possibilities of Channels and Masks. Photoshop maven Marc Silverman will lead you through step-by-step demonstrations of Type Styling, Flaming Text, Metallic Text, and other Selected Channel Operations.
Scanning for Success - Getting the Best Scans
What are the best ways to get that image from the printed page into the Mac? What about resolution and scanning methods for line art images as opposed to photos? How can we eliminate moire patterns? What are the best formats to save in for different types of projects? Even if you don't own a scanner, this seminar will give you important information on the best ways to scan your images.
QuarkXPress - Introduction
Basic Foundation for beginning Quark users. Preliminary knowledge of the Macintosh environment is necessary, including an understanding of the Finder, Files, Folders, Windows, Opening and Saving files, Saving files in Folders, Opening Applications, and related Mac functions. Level One will focus on the basic operations of the tools on the Tool Palette. Students will develop an understanding of Quark by working right from the start on documents they create, and by the end of each session will have attained a working ability from which to further their explorations.
QuarkXPress - Intermediate
The Level 2 QuarkXPress class will open with a focus on the Typographic side of QuarkXPress. Coverage of advanced Type Styling, Kerning, Tracking, Baselines, Hyphenation and Justification, and other details important to typography will be more thoroughly explored. Deeper exploration of Picture Box modifications will be covered, along with ways to use and work with graphic elements. Working with Master Pages and Style Sheets will round out this level of Quark training
QuarkXPress - Advanced Workshop
Students will further develop their understanding of QuarkXPress by continuing with the more advanced features for which this robust application is known. Desktop publishers, traditional publishing firms, and others in many facets of graphic arts and communication rely upon the rich and complete range of features which Quark provides. Emphasis will be placed on the coverage of the "under the hood" aspects of the application which can be used in their own work by students who complete this level. Flexible course content structured on the needs of the attending students will permit discussion and exploration of specific QuarkXPress functions.
